INLAID CHEST OF DRAWERS - PIEDMONT - LOUIS XVI
Description:
Elegant Piedmontese Louis XVI Inlaid Chest of Drawers – Late 18th Century Precious three-drawer chest of drawers in Louis XVI style, a refined expression of Piedmontese cabinetmaking from the late 18th century (circa 1780-1790). The piece of furniture stands out for the exceptional quality of its geometric inlays and the masterful choice of wood essences, typical of workshops active in the Turin and Piedmontese area influenced by the neoclassical taste of the time. Technical and Construction Details Period: Late 18th Century (Louis XVI Period, circa 1780-1790) Origin: Piedmont, Italy Essences: Walnut, boxwood, poplar (for the internal structure) and stained fruitwoods for decorative details. Condition: Excellent general condition. The furniture has a splendid antique patina, enhanced by a shellac polish applied by buffer. Structurally sound. Description The Front and Drawers The chest of drawers has the classic configuration of three drawers: The first drawer: Narrower, it is embellished with a rich geometric inlay with alternating reserves (circles and rectangles) in contrasting light and dark woods, creating a dynamic three-dimensional effect. The two lower drawers: Wider, they are optically united and decorated with a splendid walnut veneer arranged in a herringbone pattern (quartered). Both are framed by a refined geometric Greek key border in boxwood and dark woods. The uprights: Enriched with neoclassical candelabra and pendant leaf inlays. The Top and Sides The top: Entirely in wood (a highly appreciated feature compared to marble tops, as it shows the continuity of the cabinetmaker's work), it features a geometric veneer mirrored to that of the drawers, enclosed by the same perimeter Greek key border that enhances its chamfered shape on the front corners. The sides: Faithfully replicate the decorative scheme of the front, with large quartered walnut panels and inlaid geometric frames. Supports and Details The Legs: The furniture rests on four elegant truncated pyramid legs ("hairpin legs"), typical of the Louis XVI repertoire, finely veneered and decorated with drop inlays on the sides. The Hardware: Neoclassical-style gilt bronze keyhole escutcheons and pendant ring handles, perfectly coeval. Key present and working locks.
