Carved solid walnut refectory table, Northern Italy, late 17th century
Description:
Carved solid walnut refectory table, Northern Italy, late 17th century Dimensions: cm W 143.5 x D 89 x H 80; top thickness 4 cm Price: by private negotiation Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity This refectory table was made in Northern Italy around the end of the 17th century. Made of solid walnut wood, it features the characteristic carving of refectory tables, austere and solid, with a rustic top and shaped, dynamic legs with a wavy profile. For greater stability, the legs are connected by a stretcher. In this table, the stretcher, made of antique 17th-century wood, was inserted during a 19th-century restoration to replace iron elements that were inserted in the center of the top, underneath, where their mark can still be observed today. The refectory table style originated in Italian monasteries and noble residences, where it was used as both a work table and in dining rooms. The essentiality of the structure, combined with the dynamic line of the legs, emphasizes the practical function of the furniture. Placed in classic, rustic, or modern settings, it appears very decorative and has a charming appeal.
