Still life with a vase of flowers, Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608 - 1675) Workshop
Description:
Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608 - 1675) Workshop Still life with a vase of flowers Oil on canvas 76 x 61 cm. - In frame (defects) 93 x 77 cm FULL DETAILS OF THE WORK (CLICK HERE) The composition features a rich floral bouquet placed inside an elegant vase with a classical profile, barely visible, resting on a surface below that blends into the dim light. The bouquet is composed of various species depicted with exceptional naturalistic precision; striped tulips (in shades of red, white, and pink), open roses, carnations with jagged petals, and small white flowers like jasmine or anemones that punctuate the composition stand out. The painting is attributed to the workshop of Giovanni Stanchi, also known as Stanchi dei Fiori. Giovanni Stanchi (Rome, 1608 – circa 1675) headed a prolific family workshop that collaborated with the most illustrious Roman families, such as the Barberini, Chigi, and Colonna. Stanchi's flower paintings represent a crucial moment in the transition from Caravaggesque naturalism to the decorative magnificence of Roman Baroque. The work is characterized by a strong Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, where the flowers emerge with vibrant luminosity from a completely dark background, which enhances the brilliance and vivacity of the red, white, and golden pigments, and gives an almost sculptural three-dimensionality to the corollas. The formal accuracy and precision in depicting petals and leaves demonstrate the influence of Flemish masters and the great technical skill of the Stanchi workshop in rendering reflections and natural freshness. The painting is enclosed in an important period-style box frame, characterized by lacquered bands in a blue-green tone with golden profiles and prominent carved and gilded corner decorations with foliage motifs.
