Pietà, oil painting on copper, Northern Italy, 17th century
Description:
In the foreground is the dead Christ, lifeless and limply lying on Mary's knees, supported and adored by a woman who, kneeling on the left side of the composition, touches his hand with her face, and by two sad and adoring angels on the right. The figure of Mary, with her head surrounded by a shining halo, looks towards the viewer, with an expression full of emotion and fatal inconsolability. Particularly intense in the rendering of the feelings that distinguish all the figures represented, the painting is in a good state of conservation. It is framed by a small Venetian temple from the 16th century with columns in the round, various carving movements, and closed, in the upper part, by two opposing cornucopias.
