The Madonna of the Milk is one of the most moving and revered sacred images in Christian tradition, depicting the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child.
This particular image is also known by the Latin designation "Virgo Lactans".
This iconography has been present since the Romanesque period in Byzantine and Eastern art, inspired by even older traditions, such as the Egyptian goddess Isis nursing Horus.
In the West, the Madonna of the Milk became established from the 12th century onwards, favored by cultural and commercial exchanges with the Byzantine world, spreading throughout Italy, especially in Tuscany and Lombardy.
The Madonna of the Milk is considered by the Christian Universe to be the ultimate image of Maternity, transcending artistic boundaries to become a universal symbol of divine Love and Protection.
