Gothic chest, Veneto 15th Century
Description:
Gothic chest. (Dimensions 79.5 x 50.5 height 42.5cm)
Origin: Veneto
Period: mid-'400, 15th century
Made of solid walnut, with characteristic dovetail joints clearly visible on the sides, the chest, of contained proportions, is adorned on the front with elaborate hardware with a dual opening mechanism. On the sides it is equipped with handles and rosette plates with openwork, featuring slender phytomorphic motifs in late Gothic style, as on the front. The inner face of the lid, with strap hinges recessed into the wood, was originally adorned at the ends with openwork medallions, which are unfortunately missing, but their traces remain. Furthermore, it appears soberly inlaid with geometric patterns in boxwood and walnut. Inside, it features a series of compartments also bordered by light-yet-visible stringing.
