Mattia Traverso (Genoa 1885 - Genoa 1956) - Large banquet scene with putti and nymphs.
Description:
Mattia Traverso (Genoa 1885 - Genoa 1956) - Large banquet scene with putti and nymphs. 102 x 161 cm (unframed) - 123 x 181 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Artwork signed lower right: "Mattia Traverso". Mattia Traverso was a Genoese painter active in the first half of the 20th century, trained within the Ligurian academic tradition with a marked inclination for subjects of an arcadian and mythological taste. His production is characterized by solid technical skill and a luminous palette, which in some works reveals the influence of Italian Baroque painting, particularly Genoese and Venetian. The painting depicts an ancient banquet scene animated by putti and nude female figures. In the center, a nymph, seen from behind, pours a drink into a chalice held by a young figure, while in the foreground appear a dog, a metallic amphora, and fruit. In the background, an architectural backdrop with columns introduces a group of festive figures. The overall composition is reminiscent of the 17th-century tradition of bacchanalian scenes, reinterpreted with a 20th-century academic pictorial language. Condition report: Original canvas.
