MARINA ALLE CINQUE TERRE - OIL ON PLYWOOD - GIUSEPPE CASELLI (1893 - 1976)
Description:
This painting represents a work of great documentary and artistic value by Giuseppe Caselli (1893–1976), a central figure in the Spezia and Ligurian painting scene. Analysis of the work The painting captures a powerful vision of the Ligurian coast, likely tied to the iconic cliffs of the Cinque Terre, favored subjects of the artist. The composition is dominated by the chromatic and material contrast between the rock, rendered in warm, earthy tones, and the frenetic movement of the sea. Caselli's brushwork is dense, almost sculptural: the waves are depicted through a dense interplay of color touches that convey the white foam and the blue-green reflections, transmitting a sense of vital energy and constant change. The layering of color on the panel highlights a formal research that moves from an initial interest in Divisionism towards a personal Expressionism, capable of translating visual emotion into a synthesis of light and matter. Period: 1930s Dimensions: 125 x 104 cm including the frame, 98 x 75 cm the panel only Biographical note: Giuseppe "Pino" Caselli Born in Luzzara (Reggio Emilia) in 1893 and moved to La Spezia, Caselli was a pupil of masters of the caliber of Felice Del Santo and Antonio Discovolo, and also came into contact with Lorenzo Viani from 1913. His biographical journey is marked by dramatic experiences, such as his internment during World War I, which left deep traces in his poetics, nourishing his style with an introspective and at times tormented component. Despite international experiences, his connection with the Spezia territory remained unbreakable: his entire production is an incessant narrative of the coast, historic districts, and the sea, making him one of the most beloved and collected artists locally. Authenticity and Relevance: The Archive and the exhibition "22+22" The tag on the back attests to the importance of this specific work in the valorization of the artist's oeuvre: Archiving: The work is regularly included in the catalog of the Giuseppe Caselli Archive, established in 2016 at the Startè cultural association. The presence of the archiving certifies the provenance and authenticity of the painting, a crucial element for the historical preservation and enhancement of the master's work. Exhibition "22+22 Paintings by Giuseppe Caselli": The painting was featured in the exhibition held between October and December 2022 at Spazio Startè in La Spezia. The event, curated by Paolo Asti with critical contributions from Valerio Dehò and Francesco Vaccarone, represented an important anthological recognition, rekindling public and collector interest in the painter's historical production. The fact that the painting was selected for this exhibition, curated directly by the spiritual heirs and scholars who preside over the Archive, confirms its artistic quality and representativeness within the vast repertoire of seascapes created by Caselli throughout his long career.
