French painter (19th-20th century) - Erotic scene.
Description:
French painter (19th-20th century) - Erotic scene. 10 x 14 cm (unframed) - 36 x 38 cm (framed). Watercolor on paper, with passe-partout, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The watercolor belongs to a genre of private production, widespread in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, intended for a cultured and discreet clientele. The miniature format and watercolor technique were typically adopted for gallant and erotic subjects, a tradition that has its roots in 18th-century libertine illustration and found new fortune in the Parisian environment and European capitals in the 19th century. The scene takes place in an elegant interior with gilded paneled walls and a decorative medallion in the background. A man in 18th-century attire is depicted in an explicitly erotic scene with a woman semi-reclined on a green sofa, wrapped in a large orange cloak. The composition is rendered with loose brushstrokes, effectively capturing the fabrics and architectural elements of the setting.
