Antique 17th-century Italian painting, Madonna with Child
Description:

COD 01156

A splendid religious painting from the second half of the 17th century. An artwork oil on canvas of remarkable pictorial quality, it depicts a Madonna with Child. Due to its compositional approach and stylistic characteristics, the painting can reasonably be placed within the circle of Domenico Piola (1627-1703), one of the leading figures of Genoese Baroque painting. His style is distinguished by the elegance of the figures, the idealized grace of the faces, the softness of the flesh tones, the refined orchestration of the draperies, and a delicate luminosity that lends the scenes an atmosphere of serene spirituality (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs).

The Virgin is depicted seated in a barely sketched landscape, at the foot of a large tree that forms the backdrop to the composition. With a delicate gesture, she supports the Child Jesus, who spontaneously clings to her chest in a tender embrace. The iconography eschews any superfluous narrative element, entrusting the entire expressive force to the loving relationship between mother and child.

The Madonna's face is the true fulcrum of the artwork. Her downcast gaze, elongated oval, thin nose, and slight melancholy expressiveness convey a feeling of profound inner meditation. The Child, with golden curls expertly modeled by the light, gazes affectionately toward us. His spontaneous, childlike pose eschews any devotional rigidity and lends the scene a rare emotional immediacy.

One of the most fascinating elements of the artwork is the exceptional treatment of the fabrics. The large ivory-colored veil that completely envelops the Virgin's head and shoulders is the true protagonist and takes on an almost architectural function: the large folds, constructed through delicate chiaroscuro effects, create a refined sculptural effect that lends monumentality to the figure. The palette is dominated by warm tones, illuminated by a soft light that delicately shapes the skin tones and draperies, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

Thanks to its vertical format and extraordinary chromatic elegance, the painting is ideally placed above a chest of drawers, a console table, or a fireplace in a formal living room or study. The delicate composition and soft tones also allow for a perfect pairing with both antique and contemporary interiors. The beautifully decorated 20th-century gilded wood frame shows some signs of age. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 92.5 x W 69.5 cm.
