The Susse Frères Foundry is a historic French manufactory, founded in 1839 by Auguste Susse and specialized in the production of high-quality gilt bronze sculptures and decorations. Active during the Belle Époque, it collaborated with numerous renowned artists, distinguishing itself for the fineness of its chasing and the elegance of its design, elements that consecrated its fame among the most appreciated foundries in Europe. The pair presented here, in veined yellow marble, is adorned with gilt bronze mounts signed by the designer Becker and marked by the foundry with the serial number 38. The four satyr masks placed at the top of the stems are enveloped by elegant vegetal volutes and acanthus leaves that accompany their rounded profile. An identical pair, bearing the same signatures of Becker and Susse Frères but made of pink veined marble, was auctioned at Christie's in London (19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics including a Property from the Palazzo of a Milanese Noble Family, March 19, 2009, lot 87, for £22,500).
