It is easy to identify the subjects of this fascinating pair of portraits as the sovereigns of France, namely Louis XV of Bourbon, who ascended the throne in 1715 at the mere age of thirteen and was nicknamed "the Beloved," and Maria Leszczyńska, Queen Consort of France and Navarre and daughter of King Stanislaus I of Poland.
The Queen is depicted in a three-quarter view, with a smiling face turned towards the viewer. She wears a gray wig with her hair gathered at the nape of her neck and a diadem on her head, as well as earrings. She is dressed in a low-cut red velvet gown, brocaded with gold threads, with rich lace sleeves, and a bodice adorned with a stomacher featuring brilliant and pearl jewels. A blue velvet mantle embroidered with the heraldic fleurs-de-lis of the French Crown and lined with ermine rests on her shoulders.
The King, also immortalized in a three-quarter view, wears armor over a coat, with a blue sash over his shoulder and a white collar around his neck. His face shows the same serene expression that illuminates his consort's face.
It is presumed that these portraits are derived from a pair of official paintings of the sovereigns, very likely executed by Jean-Baptiste van Loo (1684-1745), prototypes traditionally dated to the year of their wedding, 1725, of which several smaller replicas are known.
Similar features of the sovereigns can be seen in paintings by contemporaries, such as in the canvases by Charles Van Loo (collections of the Palace of Versailles, Salon of Mars), Jean Marc Nattier (Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw), Alexis-Simon Belle (Trianon). We can name another painter who dedicated himself to such subjects, precisely Pierre Gobert (Fontainebleau 1662 - Paris 1744), whose portraiture shows close stylistic affinities with our two subjects.
As one of the most significant and sought-after portraitists of his time and a great interpreter of the French school, working in France at the courts of Louis XIV and then Louis XV, he obtained a large number of commissions during his career. His workload implied the existence of a complex workshop: it is therefore plausible to assume that these were made by one of his direct and faithful collaborators.
The pair of works is presented in a good state of conservation, with beautiful carved and gilded wooden frames, also in excellent condition.
