Painting in the Circle of Giacomo Francesco Cipper, Boy with Chickens
Description:
Oil on canvas. The painting, in its pictorial style and subject matter, refers to the production of the circle of Giacomo Francesco Cipper, known as "il Todeschini," an artist of Austrian origin who established himself in Milan. He specialized in market scenes, outdoor concerts, card players, and scenes of humble daily life, rendered with cheerful caricatural exaggerations and a pursuit of comic effect. This is evident in the present work, which depicts a young commoner tending to two chickens placed in a basket on a table. However, the knife placed nearby suggests that he will sacrifice them shortly! Cipper's characters, though humble, are distinguished by an impudent disposition, manifested by their direct gaze at the viewer, drawing attention, as is the case here: the boy looks ahead, smiling and winking, seeking the approval or even the complicity of the observer. The work is therefore attributable to an artist very close to Cipper. It has been restored and relined in the past. It is presented in a guilloché frame from the early 20th century.
