LARGE PARADE PLATE WITH TRIUMPH OF GALATEA SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Description:
Elegant and unique large parade plate, in polychrome majolica. The plate, of considerable size, features refined decorations inside, characterized at the center by the classical depiction of the so-called "Triumph of Galatea". The nymph Galatea is indeed represented in apotheosis, on a shell chariot at sea, and semi-nude, surrounded by nereids, tritons, and putti, one of whom is flying and about to shoot an arrow. Around the rim of the plate, on the other hand, are depicted motifs with vegetal interlacings and fantastic faces, which also recall classical art. This is a plate of great taste and refinement, appreciable for its chromatic rendering and realistic details, capable of lending a touch of class and antiquity to any setting. Neapolitan manufacture, probably attributable to the workshop of Gaetano Battaglia (1850-1880), from the second half of the 19th century. Dimensions: H x D 5 x 65cm
