Jacopo Amigoni (Venice 1682 - Madrid 1752) - Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John.
Description:
Jacopo Amigoni (Venice 1682 - Madrid 1752) - Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John. 82 x 62 cm without frame, 104.5 x 86.5 cm with frame. Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. Appraisals: Prof. Dario Succi, Gorizia (critical report attached). Jacopo Amigoni is among the protagonists of European Rococo. A student of Antonio Bellucci, he was a prominent figure in early 18th-century Venetian painting, successfully active in the major European courts of Bavaria, England, and Spain, before finally settling in Madrid, where he died in 1752. The Madonna and Child is one of his most congenial sacred subjects, rendered with a chromatic sensibility and a painterly style that progressively refined throughout his career. The composition shows the Virgin looking towards heaven, holding the sleeping Child in her arms. Beside them, the young Saint John - recognizable by his slender reed cross and thin golden halo - contemplates the scene with joined hands in prayer. The loose brushwork, the chromatic lightness of Mary's almost adolescent face, the contrast between the cobalt mantle and the red tunic, and the soft, plastic rendering of the infant confidently place the canvas in the artist's mature period, dating to around the early 1740s, after his return to Venice from England. Comparison with the Madonna and Child with the Young Saint John from the Terruzzi collection and with the Visitation altarpiece in the Venetian church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, known as della Fava (documented in 1743), confirms this dating, as noted by Dario Succi in the attached critical report.
