The composition faithfully reproduces the master's autograph version formerly in the G. Isham Collection, Lamport, Northamptonshire, documented by J. Daniels in Sebastiano Ricci (1976, p. 44, no. 128) and in L'opera completa di Sebastiano Ricci (1976, p. 129, no. 437). The light emanating from the Child and spreading over the faces of the shepherds, the loose brushwork, and the warm palette harmonized in tones of ochre, red, and cool white are distinctive elements of Ricci's style.
