Workshop of Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734) - Adoration of the Shepherds.
Description:
Workshop of Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734) - Adoration of the Shepherds. 55 x 43 cm (unframed) - 77 x 62 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a rich carved and gilded wooden frame. The work is a copy of the painting by Sebastiano Ricci (Belluno 1659 - Venice 1734) formerly in the G. Isham Collection, Lamport, Northamptonshire (United Kingdom). The painting is attributable to the workshop of Sebastiano Ricci, one of the main protagonists of the Venetian eighteenth century and a key figure in the renewal of Italian painting in a Rococo style. The composition faithfully reproduces the master's autograph version formerly in the G. Isham Collection, Lamport, Northamptonshire, documented by J. Daniels in Sebastiano Ricci (1976, p. 44, no. 128) and in L'opera completa di Sebastiano Ricci (1976, p. 129, no. 437). The light emanating from the Child and spreading over the faces of the shepherds, the loose brushwork, and the warm palette harmonized in tones of ochre, red, and cool white are distinctive elements of Ricci's style. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal scheme around the manger, with an angel in the upper left completing the scene. Condition report: Relined canvas.
