Flemish painter active in Italy (17th century) - Baptism of Christ.
122 x 74 cm (unframed) - 133 x 86 cm (framed).
Oil on canvas, in a wooden frame.
The scene depicts the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River: Saint John the Baptist, on the right, places his hand on Christ's head, while the dove of the Holy Spirit descends from luminous clouds. Behind Saint John, an angel is partially hidden by the figure of the Baptist. In the background, a group of figures is gathered on the riverbank. In the foreground, a man, a woman, and a child animate the composition, arranged in a manner still reminiscent of Mannerism in the torsion and positioning of their bodies. The wooded landscape and the warm palette complete a work attributable to the Flemish figurative culture active in Italy during the 17th century.
