View of Rome with the Trevi Fountain, attributed to Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723 - 1790)
Description:
Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723 - 1790) Attributed View of Rome with the Trevi Fountain Oil on canvas (50 x 62 cm - in frame 61 x 74 cm.) The work belongs to a series of three paintings, along with views of Piazza Navona and San Giovanni in Laterano. Of excellent quality, the splendid view of Rome proposed here, depicting the very famous Trevi Fountain with Palazzo Poli behind it, is to be attributed to the Roman view painter Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint (Rome 1723 - 1790). It is the largest of the famous fountains in the Eternal City, located in the square of the same name, offering a suggestive glimpse at the intersection of the narrow streets of the historic center. It was built from 1732 to 1762 by order of Pope Clement XII, following the project of architect Nicola Salvi. In detail, we see the majestic rocky cliff in stone that rests on Palazzo Poli, allowing water to flow into the large basin surmounted by the statue of Oceanus, driving a shell-shaped chariot. The view is characterized by a luminous chromatic timbre, with the brightness of the sun tending to fade, imparting a delicate sense of chromatic peace, a stylistic aspect typical of the mature phase of our painter, who achieved solid fame as a view painter by accurately depicting the city of Rome. The painting, in particular, is a derivation of an engraving by the famous Giuseppe Vasi (Corleone 1710 – Rome 1782), taken from the monumental collection titled 'Of the Magnificences of Ancient and Modern Rome,' with the most beautiful views of the Eternal City, which ensured him great fame, thanks above all to the always original and perspective-captivating framing of the compositions and the never-obvious choice of subjects. Giuseppe Vasi, who reveals the fullness of his graphic creativity in this monumental work, became an important reference point for the view painters active in Rome: it was indeed customary for artists of the time to refer to his prints – as happened in Venice with Visentini's engravings – to create precise iconographies of places. Views like ours, in particular, were created by Giovanni Giacomo Van Lint to satisfy collectors and refined travelers, especially English, German, and French, who visited the city during their "Voyage d'Italie," eager to own a souvenir image of Rome in its most relaxed and characteristic dimension. For this reason, he became a much-admired painter and was very successful among foreign visitors to Rome, who snapped up views and landscapes of small dimensions and thus more easily transportable, so much so that almost all of his paintings are now in private European collections, particularly English ones.
