Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 - Milan 1936) - Girl with tiger.
Description:
Emilio Magistretti (Milan 1851 - Milan 1936) - Girl with tiger. 67 x 56 cm (unframed) - 83 x 72 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a contemporary carved and lacquered wooden frame. Work signed lower left: "E. Magistretti". Emilio Magistretti was a Milanese painter active between the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. Trained in the Lombard academic environment, he sojourned in Paris where he absorbed the influences of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, which he integrated with a solid realistic foundation. His portrait production is distinguished by vibrant chromatic rendering and the ability to capture the psychology of the subjects with measure and effectiveness. The painting depicts a young woman in a bust, three-quarters view with her gaze turned sideways, in a composed and relaxed pose. Her left arm encircles the neck of a tiger, rendered with naturalistic attention to its striped coat. The background, treated with loose touches of green and ochre, gives depth without diverting attention from the figure. The execution recalls the style of Parisian painting of the late 19th century, to which the work is likely to be attributed. Condition report: Relined canvas. Good condition of the painted surface.
