Italian sculptor (19th-20th century) - Pair of pedestal sculptures depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite.
44 x 44 x h 90 cm each.
Entirely carved in yellow marble, in Baroque style. Slight chips and natural stone veining.
A pair of pedestal sculptures entirely carved in yellow marble, depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite. The two figures, kneeling on stylized dolphins and resting on a curvilinear base with a wave motif, support a shell-shaped upper surface with their raised arms. The male figure, with thick curly hair and beard, supports the surface with plastic vigor; the female figure, crowned, is draped to cover her nudity. The work recalls the Baroque decorative repertoire of Italian fountains and gardens, reinterpreted here in the 19th and 20th centuries in a scenographic style. The natural veins of the yellow marble, traversed by reddish inclusions, accentuate the plastic movement of the figures.
