Diana bathing with Nymphs, Antoine Coypel (Paris, 1661 - 1722) Circle
Description:
Antoine Coypel (Paris, 1661 - 1722) Circle Diana bathing with Nymphs Oil on canvas 92 x 72 cm. - Framed 109 x 91 cm. FULL DETAILS OF THE PAINTING (CLICK HERE) The scene, set in an outdoor mythological context, characterized by a soft and theatrical atmosphere typical of the 17th-century French school, shows us Diana, goddess of the hunt, easily recognizable by the crescent moon on her head, naked and partially covered by a blue mantle that falls over her legs. The goddess, seated in the center of the composition, is surrounded by maids and nymphs who assist her during her bath, all naked, following a hunt, as evidenced by the bows and quivers laid down; one of them, on the left, is kneeling while helping her take off her shoes, while another, on the opposite side, offers her a basket full of fruit and flowers. The work derives, although varying in some aspects (first and foremost, in the original the figures appear clothed), from a composition by Antoine Coypel (Paris 1661 - 1722) kept in the Musée Départemental des Vosges in Épinal, France (img. 1 - https://www.pubhist.com/w74885), already celebrated in its time thanks to engravers like Pieter van den Berge (1694 - 1737) who contributed to its diffusion (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, img. 2 - https://id.rijksmuseum.nl/200395096). This work, "Le Repos de Diane", dedicated above all to the delight of collectors who loved this subject to adorn their rooms, was very successful from the original in 1695, as evidenced by numerous contemporary copies; among these is ours, the work of a skilled painter from Coypel's circle. Given his position as director of the Académie Royale and "First Painter to the Duke of Orléans", Coypel had an enormous influence on a generation of French painters of the early 18th century, who studied his great decorative cycles such as the Gallery of Aeneas at the Palais-Royal in Paris. The painting, of excellent quality, re-presents the studied scenographic arrangement, where the measured postures of the nymphs in the foreground serve to direct the viewer's gaze towards the central figure of Diana. The use of warm colors and the softness of the forms reflect the influence of Coypel's style, known for his mastery in representing mythological and elegant scenes.
