This bronze sculpture, mounted on a green marble base, is the work of the renowned Piedmontese artist Pietro Canonica (1869–1959). The work, titled "The Abyss" (also known as The Lovers or Paolo and Francesca). The composition captures the desperate and dramatic embrace of the two lovers, wrapped in dynamic drapery that accentuates the pathos of the scene.
