A splendid Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork, of remarkable pictorial quality, it depicts a genre scene set in the interior of an inn. The painting depicts an elderly man seated next to a young woman who offers him a piece of bread, creating a composition of great naturalness and irony. On the table are garlic, a glass, and a flask of red wine, elements that recall the simplicity of peasant life.
The psychological characterization of the protagonists is particularly refined, noting the subtle smile of the man who gives us a pleased look. In terms of style, pictorial quality, and naturalistic sensitivity, the painting appears to be attributable to the Lombard tradition that developed between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, within the context of the finest genre painting dedicated to the depiction of the popular world.
