Portrait of a gentleman – signed "Fran. Palizzi", 1850
Description:
Portrait of a gentleman – signed "Fran. Palizzi", 1850 Refined oil portrait on canvas depicting an elegant gentleman of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie, signed and dated lower right "Fran. Palizzi 1850". Born in Vasto on April 16, 1825, died in Naples on March 16, 1871. Brother of Filippo Palizzi. He studied historical painting under the guidance of Giuseppe Bonolis in Naples, and in 1848, upon joining his brother Giuseppe Palizzi in Paris, he successfully pursued genre painting in that city. He returned to Italy due to the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War and died a few months later. Among his notable works are: "The Blind Man of Jericho," preserved in the church of San Pietro in Vasto; "Head of a Woman," belonging to the Ciccarone family; "Saint Cordola" and "Our Lady of Sorrows," both in the Convent of Santa Chiara in Lanciano. Some of his studies are preserved in the Palizzi Room of the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples. The work is distinguished by the quality of the physiognomic rendering, the fine modeling of the flesh tones, and the careful description of the clothing, elements typical of Italian portraiture from the mid-19th century. The painting is presented in a valuable carved and gilded wood frame with gold leaf, coeval and richly decorated with floral motifs and volutes.
