FIVE OLD PARIS PLATES, FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY
Description:
Refined set of five Old Paris porcelain plates, finely painted and with gilded decorations. The peculiarity of these plates lies in the painted depiction, different on each, referencing historical and mythical scenes and characters, revealed on the back with a gilded inscription in French. Specifically: the representation of the death of the Duke of Guise, commander of the Catholic League in the 16th century; Socrates with his finger raised, inspired by the famous painting by David; Marius Curio Dentatus, a symbol of integrity and modesty, whose legend tells of him refusing gold from the Samnites; Virgil's shepherd, inspired by the engraving by François Gélée and the painting by Felix Boisselier, which reinterprets a famous passage from Virgil's Culex; and finally, the depiction of Belisarius, the famous general of Justinian in the 6th century, which reinterprets a depiction by François Gérard. The plates are also well-preserved, and this is a set of great class and refinement, capable of adding a touch of elegance to any environment. French manufactory, from the Charles X period, around the first half of the 19th century. Measurements: H x D 3 x 21.5cm
