European painter (18th c.) - The bloodletting.
Description:
European painter (18th c.) - The bloodletting. 66 x 49 cm (without frame) - 85 x 68 cm (with frame). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The scene depicts a nocturnal interior animated by five figures: at the center of the composition, a young patient, seated on a chair with red breeches, offers his arm to a doctor or surgeon performing a bloodletting, a therapeutic practice widely used in the eighteenth century. The doctor, dressed in a green jacket and a velvet cap, holds a lancet in one hand while a boy holds a receptacle under the incision; on the left, a woman and a man watch the scene with expressions of apprehension. In the background, an open window reveals a moon illuminating the night sky, while a heavy dark drape closes the composition on the right. This subject falls within the genre of Northern European and Flemish painting, with possible influences from the French and English narrative tradition of the 18th century. The dark palette, enlivened by touches of red on the breeches and the bloodletting receptacle, the rendering of the flesh tones, and the spatial construction of the interior recall the Transalpine figurative culture of the 18th century.
