Canted cherry sideboard - Veneto - 18th century.
Description:
Elegant Venetian Canted Sideboard
Period: Late 18th century (Late Settecento)
Origin: Veneto, Italy
Wood: Solid cherry wood
Structural and Stylistic Description
A refined "scantonata" (canted) sideboard from the Veneto region, dating back to the late 18th century, entirely crafted from cherry wood, a species appreciated for its beautiful warm patina, vibrant grain, and extraordinary natural luster.
The piece is distinguished by its characteristic three-tiered broken front, featuring forty-five-degree canted corners that lighten its volume.
The Upper Body: Beneath the elegantly shaped top, a dynamic frieze houses three drawers: a large central drawer and two smaller drawers positioned on the canted corners, all fitted with bronze knobs.
The Lower Body: The lower section mirrors the upper section's dynamism with four paneled doors, framed and featuring veneered central panels (two central doors and two doors on the canted corners). These open to a spacious interior divided by a sturdy original shelf.
The Base: The sideboard rests on elegant shaped bracket feet, typical of late 18th-century Venetian cabinetmaking tradition, which elongate the structure while ensuring perfect stability.
