Oil on canvas painting. Port scene, 18th century.
Description:
Oil on canvas. French School, 18th century. View of a port landing near a white city, with ships at anchor offshore and rowboats with passengers moving towards or from them. Numerous figures animate the scene, set at dawn, with the sun still low behind the clouds, its rays filtering through to illuminate the sky. Similar works are known from the painter Charles François Lacroix de Marseille (1700 - 1779), who worked in Italy for a long time, establishing himself with his idealized views of the Mediterranean coast. Port views are recurring, a synthesis of realism and ornamental taste, with a departure from classical landscape that anticipated solutions of Enlightenment and Romantic taste. The painting has undergone restoration and re-canvasing in the past. It is presented in a period-style frame.
