Painting The Gathering of Manna, 17th Century
Description:
Oil on canvas. Central European school from the late 17th century. The large scene recounts the biblical episode narrated in the book of Exodus of the miracle performed by God to help the people of Israel fleeing from Egypt: since the Israelites could not procure food in the desert, God made it rain manna from heaven every morning, which covered the ground like dew and could be gathered and consumed, although the divine prescription imposed that only what was necessary for that day should be collected, as a sign of trust in God, who would renew the miracle. In the scene presented here, in the center, some women, men, and boys are gathering with all available containers the light white powder falling from the sky, where a ray of light descending upon the scene indicates the divine presence; on the right, Moses and Aaron can be recognized, attending with satisfaction; on the left, in the background, is the Israelites' camp with other figures hurrying to gather. While the prophet and the priest wear clothing appropriate to their era, the women in the center wear elegant attire contemporary to the painting's creation. The work shows traces of previous restorations; there are currently tears in the canvas. Presented in a 19th-century style frame. Product condition: Product in good condition, shows minor signs of wear. We try to present the actual state as completely as possible with the photos. If some details are not clear from the photos, what is stated in the description is authoritative.
