Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child Jesus
Description:
"Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child Jesus" Oil on canvas, 60 x 81 cm Attributed to Stefano Maria Legnani, known as Legnanino (Milan, 1661 - 1713). The painting depicts Saint Anthony of Padua holding the Child Jesus in his arms, a motif that is very dear to Christian tradition. The scene is inspired by a mystical vision that, according to legend, the saint experienced during prayer, in which the Child Jesus appeared to him and rested in his arms. Clad in his typical Franciscan habit, a symbol of humility and devotion, Saint Anthony is often depicted with other iconographic attributes, such as the lily – a symbol of purity – and the book, which recalls his theological wisdom and skill in preaching. This image aims to highlight the intimate bond between the saint and Christ, embodying values of tenderness, affection, and profound spirituality. This theme was highly popular during the Baroque era but is also found in numerous works from the Renaissance and in popular devotional art.
