Pair of paintings on copper - Flemish/Dutch School - Circle of Michiel Carree
Description:
Refined pair of oil paintings on copper depicting pastoral scenes with cattle and sheep immersed in wooded landscapes. The works, datable between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, show clear affinities with Northern pastoral painting from the Dutch and Flemish sphere, particularly with the production of Michiel Carree, an artist specialized in animated landscapes and rustic scenes. The quality of the animal rendering, the luministic atmosphere, and the landscape construction also recall the pictorial tradition of artists close to the circle of Nicolaes Berchem and Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli. One of the two copper plates bears an old handwritten inscription on the back referring to "M. Carree", probably applied during the collecting era. The painting demonstrates a good quality hand, with interesting light effects, deep glazes, and remarkable attention to the rendering of the animals. The paintings are mounted in elegant new frames.
