16th century, Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Description:
16th century Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria Oil on slate, 14 x 18 cm With the frame, 23 x 28 cm The small oil painting on slate depicts the Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most widespread hagiographic subjects in European painting of the 16th century, particularly suited to the reduced format and precious rendering allowed by the stone support. The slate, with its naturally dark and compact background, favors effects of strong luminescent contrast and saturated colors, which the artist exploits to build an intense and theatrical scene. The composition is dominated by the figure of the saint, placed in the center, kneeling on a wooden base in front of the instrument of torture: the toothed wheel. Catherine wears a rich garment, with pink and golden tones that allude to her royal origin, according to the tradition that identifies her as an Egyptian princess converted to Christianity. Her face turned upwards, with her hands clasped on her chest, expresses mystical abandon and trust in divine salvation, according to the typical iconography of martyrdom accepted with spiritual serenity. A bustling scene unfolds around her: two executioners in clothing contemporary to the artist's time are caught in the act of operating or preparing the torture instrument, with energetic movements and accentuated twists that recall the Mannerist style. On the left, a figure raises a weapon or tool, while on the right, another tormentor moves away with a dynamic gesture, creating a diagonal that amplifies the narrative tension. The wheel appears broken or ineffective, an allusion to the miracle told in the Golden Legend: the instrument meant to kill Catherine shattered by divine intervention. A fundamental element is the presence of the angel in flight above the saint, armed with a sword. The angel represents both divine protection and the announcement of the martyr's final destiny, which according to tradition will be beheading. The light that strikes the celestial figure and the body of the saint emerges forcefully from the black background of the slate, creating a dramatic contrast that anticipates proto-Baroque sensibilities.
