Important Symbolist painting by Paul Schad Rossa
Description:
The large oil painting is the work of the German painter and sculptor Paul Schad-Rossa, a leading exponent of Symbolism and associated with the Munich Secession. It stages a mythological or allegorical drama shrouded in a dreamlike atmosphere. In the foreground, a naked woman despairs over the body of her companion, while on the right, a man watches with resigned melancholy. The composition is dominated by a large red sun setting among the rocks, casting scarlet hues on the water and figures. The strong contrasts between dark shadows and fiery light transform the landscape into a unique emotional mirror. Painting signed and dated 1893 Dimensions of painting only 178 cm x 105 cm Georg Paul Schad, known professionally as Paul Schad-Rossa, was an important German painter and sculptor, an exponent of the Symbolist movement. Born in Nuremberg on January 1, 1862, and died in Berlin on November 1, 1916, he left a significant mark on Central European art at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
