Sidney Richard Percy (London 1822 - Bedfordshire 1886) - River landscape with swallows in flight.
Description:
Sidney Richard Percy (London 1822 - Bedfordshire 1886) - River landscape with swallows in flight. 51.5 x 76.5 cm (unframed) - 57.5 x 82.5 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Artwork signed lower left: "Percy". Sidney Richard Percy, born Williams, is one of the foremost British landscape painters of the 19th century, a member of a family of artists active in the milieu of the English Romantic landscape school. His work focuses on the representation of English rural and riverine nature, with particular attention to the atmospheric rendering of light and vegetation. In the foreground, on the right bank, a rock emerges from the grass and flowering bushes, next to a tall tree with dense foliage. The river water extends towards the background, where the opposite bank fades into a wooded strip. The sky, crossed by white clouds, is animated by some swallows in flight. The brushwork is loose in the vegetation and more careful in rendering the water reflections, according to the artist's usual style. Condition report: Original canvas.
