Large riveted iron coffer chest, 17th century  Translated
Description:
Solid and imposing chest in solid riveted iron, dating back to the 17th century, an era when such artifacts were conceived as protective tools for money, documents, and precious objects. The massive structure, reinforced by dense rivets and considerably thick sheet metal, reflects the primary function of the piece: to resist burglary attempts and ensure maximum security. The severe and functional aesthetic is typical of North Italian and Central European production of the 17th century, when metallurgy reached a technical level that allowed for highly reliable portable safes. The flat lid, likely originally equipped with a complex internal locking mechanism, and the balanced proportions place the item in the category of travel or chamber chests, used by affluent families, merchants, and administrations. The construction period coincides with a period of intense commercial and diplomatic mobility, during which such coffers were essential for safeguarding valuables during travel. The ensemble retains the authentic charm of high-quality utilitarian objects, with a consistent patina and the material strength typical of hand-wrought iron from the High Baroque period. Width 92 cm, depth 58 cm, height 52 cm. Every item from our Gallery is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by an expert from the Court and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts, and Agriculture of Genoa.  Translated
