Saint Thomas of Villanova giving alms, late 17th - early 18th century. Contemporary frame.
Dimensions:
: 51 - 61 cm,: 37 - 47 cm
Description:
Interesting oil painting on canvas, untouched and never restored, in an antique frame, which also retains its original gilding in excellent condition. It depicts Saint Thomas of Villanova, an Augustinian friar and patron saint of Valencia in Spain, also venerated in Italy, in the act of giving alms to a couple of orphans.
The painting could have been executed by a skilled painter from the Lazio region with a devotional culture, active between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Both the painting and the frame have been preserved for centuries in the condition you see, meaning they have never been cleaned or restored. The frame's original gilding remains vibrant and lustrous.
A certificate of authenticity is attached to the sale.
