Painting Madonna with Child and Saints

Oil on canvas. The grand Baroque scene is completely occupied by various figures, intertwined and overlapping, though on different levels of depth. Seated at the center of the scene is the Madonna, around whom the other characters revolve: in her arms is the Baby Jesus, leaning to the side towards the young St. John, who holds his cross topped by a banner with the inscription "Ecce Agnus Dei"; in the second line, to the left, is an angel, looking in adoration at the two children, and to the right is a saint, recognizable as St. Dominic by his iconographic attributes: the Dominican habit, but especially the star (or polar star) placed on his forehead to indicate his ability to guide to Christ, and the lily he holds in his hand, a symbol of purity. The dynamism of the bodies is accentuated by the colors of the figures, among which the colors of Mary's dress stand out: the red of the tunic, echoed by the half-hidden book behind Jesus that she holds with one hand, the blue with yellow cuffs of the mantle, which are also found in the angel's attire. The range of skin tones is also remarkably varied, with a particular contrast between the paleness of the Baby Jesus's body and the tanned complexion of the young John. The work has undergone restoration and relining in the past. It is presented in a period-style frame. Product condition: Product in good condition, shows minor signs of wear.
