If there is a subject in art that has been revisited many times throughout various eras with a constantly new and original vision, closely tied to the author's individual sensibility, then the Tower of Babel perfectly embodies these requirements. And our work, created by a Flemish painter active between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is a rare and valuable testament to this.
An ancient subject, a myth and a metaphor that is always relevant, which in art has always had the power to teleport the viewer to another world, making them curious and fascinated.
We cannot fail to mention the very famous Tower of Babel by Bruegel the Elder, which represents the perfect example of these sensations, and in general the many other works that the best Flemish painters have wanted to create to honor this theme, showcasing incredible pictorial and inventive qualities.
Although born from the author's imagination, let us remember that the Tower of Babel is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic stories in the Bible, mentioned in the book of Genesis (11:1-9[1]), where it is told that men decided to build a city and a tower whose summit would reach Heaven.
But God, seeing the excessive ambition and unity of men, who dominated the earth in peaceful union and with a single language, decided to create confusion and prevented the completion of the structure, confusing their languages so that they could no longer understand each other and leading to the dispersion of peoples.
In the lower left, the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II is depicted, a symbol of pride, followed by a group of courtiers and soldiers, shown as the architect shows him his work, astonished by the laborers.
In the background, the protagonist of the canvas, the imposing construction rises majestically on the banks of the Euphrates River, consisting of a complex structure that eclectically incorporates multiple architectural styles superimposed, drawn from the Italian Renaissance tradition with the addition of elements of a decidedly more medieval and Northern European tradition.
Looking at the details, we can lose ourselves admiring the fervent activity of the builders, with the small figures rushing up and down the ramps to complete the majestic work as quickly as possible.
