Complete details of this painting are available at the following - link - In this pleasant painting we see the evangelist John depicted, holding a quill in his hand as if in the act of writing the pages of his Gospel, while behind him the profile of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute, can be recognized. The graceful face, which nevertheless conveys a devout attitude, lending the painting a more intimate and delicate, not excessive, religiosity, is one of the typical characteristics of works intended for domestic devotion, as in the case of this Saint John. The freshness of his features is immediately apparent from the representation of the Saint; he is indeed portrayed as young and handsome: and it is precisely this iconographic particularity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasing, probably executed on commission for a private room. The painting exhibits the peculiarities of 18th-century French portraiture, characterized by soft drawing and skillful use of light. The rather marked chiaroscuro and well-calibrated shading produce an excellent result thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the dark background of the scene. The painting has been relined and is in excellent condition with still vibrant colors and a very healthy paint layer. The painting is sold together with a pleasant gilded frame.
