Description:
Oil on canvas depicting a Dolomite landscape with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo mountain group emerging in the center of the composition. The rocky peaks, characterized by sharp, vertical profiles, stand out against a sky moved by light glazes and atmospheric passages. In the foreground is the water surface of Lago di Antorno, which reflects the mountain mass and the wooded area below, creating a balance between natural elements and compositional structure.
The painting is executed with compact and layered brushwork, alternating dense areas with more fluid zones, particularly in the sky and reflections. The color palette is based on deep greens, browns, cool blues, and warm accents on the illuminated rock faces. Signed lower right.
Available with a custom-made antique fir frame from our restoration workshop upon request.
Notes on the artist:
Arno Lemke was a German painter active during the 20th century, known primarily for his alpine and mountain landscapes, inspired by the regions of Bavaria and Tyrol. His training was rooted in the Central European painting tradition, where direct observation of nature and study from life form the foundation of his artistic language.
Throughout his career, Lemke dedicated himself almost exclusively to landscape painting, favoring subjects of high mountains: rocky massifs, snow-capped peaks, alpine valleys, and wooded vistas. In his work, the mountain is never a mere backdrop but the absolute protagonist, interpreted as a living, changing organism, subject to light and atmospheric conditions.
His stylistic signature is distinguished by energetic and textured brushwork, often executed with a palette knife, which lends solidity and physical presence to the rocky surfaces. At the same time, Lemke demonstrates a particular chromatic sensitivity in his treatment of skies and distant views, rendered with light glazes and atmospheric tones capable of expanding spatial depth.
Arno Lemke's works enjoyed good diffusion in the European art market, especially in Germany and Alpine countries, where they were favored by collectors fond of the landscape tradition. Even today, his paintings are appreciated for the balance between naturalistic fidelity and painterly interpretation, qualities that make his alpine views recognizable and highly decorative.
