PAIR OF LANDSCAPES WITH ARCHITECTURAL CAPRICES – OIL ON CANVAS, 18TH CENTURY  Translated
Description:
A scenographic pair of oil paintings on canvas, depicting evocative landscapes with monumental architecture, classical ruins, and animated figures. The two compositions display a fully eighteenth-century aesthetic, characterized by idealized constructions of classical derivation set within an imaginary landscape. A large triumphal arch dominates the first canvas, while the second features a powerful fortified architecture with cylindrical towers and curtain walls. Small-scale figures, distributed in the foreground, contribute to the perspective construction of the space and lend a narrative accent to the views. The brushwork, built with a palette of earth tones and browns enlivened by golden light effects, reveals a sensibility typical of eighteenth-century Italian landscape culture, where the suggestion of antiquity is reinterpreted in a poetic and theatrical manner. The focus is not so much on topographical description as on the creation of an ideal view, in line with the taste for architectural capriccio, which was widely popular in Rome, Venice, and Northern Italy. The canvases have been relined and mounted on later wooden stretchers, conservation interventions likely carried out in the 20th century to ensure their structural stability. The works are presented within elegant gilded wooden frames. 107 x 79 cm each (with frame)  Translated
