Inlaid wood center table, Genoa, Barocchetto period, mid-18th century Dimensions: cm W 45 x D 35.5 x H 71; writing desk height 61.5 cm Price: by private negotiation Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity This refined center table, entirely veneered with kingwood and rosewood, was made in the Barocchetto period, around the mid-18th century, in Genoa. The top, with its sinuous lines on all four sides, is entirely veneered with precious kingwood arranged in four geometric marquetry panels that meet at the center. A rosewood fillet runs along the inner perimeter, framing the wood grain as a decorative motif, while the cross-grain wood edge, slightly raised on three sides, acts as a discreet railing to hold objects and small books. The front lock, with its key and chased gilt bronze escutcheon with rocaille motifs, allows the top to be flipped open to reveal a large interior compartment: here too, the inlay is extremely precise, with four panels forming a geometric composition, a sign of rare attention even in normally hidden parts. On the front, below the lock, there is a pull-out drawer that integrates a convenient pull-out writing desk. Once opened, it offers a leather-lined surface, bordered by a thin embossed and gilded decoration, perfect for placing sheets of paper, books, or a small notebook. On the right side, a side drawer with walnut interiors includes an inkwell holder, organized into compartments, testifying to the original purpose of the furniture. All sides are carefully veneered, allowing the table to be placed in the center of rooms. The slender and harmonious structure rests on four particularly sinuous and curved legs that bend naturally, finished with chased gilt bronze sabots with rocaille motifs that add a luminous and precious touch. The lines of the legs, with well-defined sharp edges, create a continuous play of light and shadow, while the rounded front central upright, finished with rosewood cross-grain wood, introduces a refined color variation that indicates the work of a high-level workshop. The lower part is completed by a veneered shelf that connects the legs, ensuring stability and offering an additional surface; here too, a thin, slightly raised cross-grain wood edge defines the perimeter with understated elegance. Overall, the table is extremely versatile: it can be placed in the center of a living room, between sofas, next to an armchair, or as a small side desk in a study, fitting naturally into both classic interiors and contemporary environments that desire a touch of cultured and refined taste. A conservation restoration will be carried out shortly.
