Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), Young Bacchus with a Satyr and Putti.
Description:
Oil on canvas of lively mythological invention, attributable without hesitation to the Genoese master, protagonist of the renewal of Baroque painting in Liguria. The scene depicts the young Bacchus among satyrs and putti, in an intertwining of dynamic and pleasantly decorative figures, according to a theme particularly dear to Genoese Baroque figurative culture, also sensitive to the suggestions of Flemish art.
The painting is distinguished by the luminous softness of the flesh tones, by its narrative liveliness, and by that decorative pleasantness which constitutes one of the most recognizable characteristics of Domenico Piola's painting. The elongated horizontal format, modified over time, also suggests a possible original belonging to a frieze or a broader decorative furnishing.
An artwork of notable quality and strong ornamental value, it is a fine representation of mature Genoese Baroque.
