Description:
Description Monumental vermeil silver tankard, Russia?, 19th century Large Russian tankard? in vermeil silver marked with 4 English hallmarks on the base, difficult to identify but not useful for attributing origin and not relevant. A 17th-century English hallmark silver was added later or used for repairing the bottom. Vermeil silver marked with 4 hallmarks: Maker's mark: unidentified Lion passant: alloy mark. Sterling 925/1000 fineness guarantee control Leopard's head with crown: city of London Date letter year: 1670-71 The bold modeling and high-relief chasing on the outer sleeve of the tankard are characteristic of goldsmiths trained in Flemish and German centers, but rarely made by English craftsmen. A similar item was sold at Sotheby's auction house on December 1, 2011, in Paris for €72,750.00; lot number 138. Presented as: Large vermeil silver tankard by Nicholls & Plinke, St. Petersburg, 1866. Height: 40 cm, weight: 3,046 grams. The strong resemblance is undeniable. In the handle, the shape, and the chasing. The body is decorated with a battle scene between Ottomans and Austrians, possibly the Siege of Vienna in 1683. On the sides of the tankard are two marks: the first with the inscription "follow me", the second with the "heraldic symbol of a British count's crown" and possibly with the "white lion of Mortimer". Unlike the rampant lion of England, this beast does not have a crown. The white lion represents discipline and loyalty and is depicted in a less aggressive stance. The shield shows a white rose surrounded by a golden sun, known heraldically as the "white rose en soleil", which is actually a combination of two distinct symbols. Both appear on the great seals of Edward IV and Richard III and were used by George VI when he was Duke of York. The white lion of Mortimer was the preferred symbol of King George I, father of Queen Elizabeth II, before his coronation. Dimensions HxWxD: 37.5cm x 27cm x 20.5cm Weight 2,532 grams Provenance Private collection Condition Slight signs of age wear and superficial scratches. The four hallmarks are present on the lid and on the bottom of the base. Irrelevant hallmarks.
