Venetian sculptor (18th century) — Group of four commoners
Description:
Venetian sculptor (18th century) — Group of four commoners 9 x 7 x h 20 cm each. Full-length figures in carved, lacquered, and painted wood. The four small sculptures depict as many popular Venetian characters in full-length: three men and one woman, shown in lively, everyday attitudes, dressed in the typical attire of the late 18th century. The male figures, with jackets, breeches, and tricorn hats, originally held tools or hunting rifles, which are now lost; the female figure holds a bouquet of flowers. The carving, with a fluid and narrative style, refers to the Venetian tradition of quality shelf or Nativity scene figurines, popular in the 18th century among bourgeois and aristocratic patrons. The group constitutes a figurative document of customs and a significant example of Venetian genre wood sculpture. Condition report: Good overall condition, with signs of aging and wear to the polychromy. Original objects/tools missing from the male figures.
