Antonio Travi, known as Il Sestri (Sestri Ponente 1608 Genoa 1668), Seascape with ruins, oil on canvas
Description:
A highly captivating work attributed to Antonio Travi, known as Il Sordo di Sestri, one of the most interesting landscape painters active in Genoa in the 17th century. The scene depicts a seascape with ancient ruins, a boat, and figures of fishermen, immersed in a luminous and suspended atmosphere. The painting displays the typical characteristics of the artist's mature period: a dense yet vibrant pictorial material, a rapid and nervous brushstroke, and a particular sensitivity in the rendering of light, constructed with shades of blue, gray, and white. The work shows affinities with other known seascapes by Travi, particularly in its compositional balance, the monumentality of the ruins, and the presence of small figures within a vast and theatrical landscape. While maintaining the appearance of a daily scene with fishermen, the subject may also conceal an allusion. Height 140.5 cm, width 80 cm. Each painting from our Gallery is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by an expert of the Court and the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa
