Francesco Gioli - Painter Gioli and his wife on the beach of Castiglioncello - Oil on cardboard, Macchiaioli  Translated
Description:
Rare and evocative oil on cardboard painting by FRANCESCO GIOLI (1846-1922), an important exponent of the Tuscan Macchiaioli movement. The work depicts the artist with his wife in a moment of quiet contemplation of the sea from the cliffs of Castiglioncello and bears witness to the painter's mature poetics, an artist deeply connected to the landscapes of the Livorno coast and his stays in Castiglioncello, one of the most important centers of Macchiaioli culture. A handwritten inscription on the verso reads: "Painter Gioli and his wife on the beach of Castiglioncello". The work possesses an uncommon autobiographical value, as it directly portrays the painter and his wife, Matilde Bartolommei, offering a rare testimony of the artist's private life. Francesco Gioli was among the protagonists of Tuscan painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, close to the circles of Diego Martelli, Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega, and the Castiglioncello School. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francesco_Gioli Approx. 29x41 cm, unframed 47x59 cm including frame  Translated
