Venetian painter (19th century) - Venice, view of the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo.  Translated
Description:
Venetian painter (19th century) - Venice, view of the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. 38.5 x 55 cm (unframed) - 47 x 63 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a carved and gilded wooden frame. The 19th-century Venetian painter who executed this view fits into the long tradition of Venetian urban vedute, which, since Canaletto and Bellotto, had found in the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo one of its most popular subjects. The composition is built around the two monuments that dominate the square: the pedestal with the equestrian statue of Colleoni, a masterpiece by Andrea del Verrocchio cast by Alessandro Leopardi in 1496, and the Renaissance facade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, with its marble decoration and famous trompe-l'oeil panels. The figures in 19th-century attire, passers-by, a stray dog, groups in conversation, recall the repertoire of Canaletto's caricatures, here interpreted with the descriptive taste typical of Venetian genre painting of the late 19th century. The light is steady and midday, with sharp shadows marking the pavement of the square. Condition report: Original canvas. Good condition of the painted surface.
