Antique naturalist etching by Jean-Camille Fonce, 1867-1938, late 19th century, 50x22cm  Translated
Description:
Antique naturalist Etching by Jean-Camille Fonce, (1867-1938) late 1800s, pencil signed at the bottom. Dimensions 50 x 22 cm including the frame, 63 x 35 cm. At the top right, it reads "Printed by Paul Moglia in Paris". The printer. Camille Fonce was a renowned French artist, painter, and engraver, best known for his evocative landscapes, masterful use of light, and spectacular views of rivers, forests, and rural scenes in both France and England. He often etched the plates himself, starting from paintings (his own or by masters like Corot and Constable). The pencil signature generally indicates an artist's proof or a limited edition approved and signed directly by the engraver. Publication date: There is a clearly visible inscription at the top left that reads: "Published May 1st 1891 by Henry Graves & Co. Ltd. London – Copyright U.S.A.". This tells us that the print was officially published on May 1, 1891, in London. Outside the main drawing: there is a small sketch of an isolated tree. In collector's jargon, this is called a remarque. Originally, it served the artist to test the acid's condition on the plate, but in the 19th century, it became a highly sought-after decorative element that identified the very first fine prints.
