Venetian, late 16th century, Christ at the Column  Translated
Description:
Venetian School, Late 16th – Early 17th century Christ at the Column Oil on walnut panel, 31 x 43 cm Antique frame 43 x 59 cm The episode of the flagellation of Christ is depicted within a dimly lit environment. This passage is narrated by all four Gospels, constituting one of the final episodes of Jesus' trial, before the crowning with thorns. With the Counter-Reformation, a common iconographic scheme was introduced, featuring Christ tied to a tall column, thus evoking the relic of the flagellation column brought to Rome in 1223 by Cardinal Giovanni Colonna and preserved at the Basilica of Santa Prassede. The serpentine figure of the tortured Christ is depicted here at the center of the scene, with a strong characterization given by his violent, already mortal pallor and bruised face, thus creating a symbolic distinction between Jesus' whiteness and the dark figures surrounding him, particularly that of the torturer on the right, ready to deliver another lash. The other two henchmen in the background, partially engulfed by shadow, are also captured in the act of forcefully delivering further blows to Christ's back. - All our works are accompanied by a detailed certificate of authenticity. - Professional packaging and insured shipping to ensure maximum safety during transport. - For further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at +39 329 319 4887 – [email protected] - Possibility of VIDEO CALLS and direct viewings by appointment in MILAN and BORGOMANERO (NO). - Further information and photos: www.dequart.com IG - FB @dequ.art  Translated
